Visual Elements & Composition

The wings are the dominant element and sit at the centre of the composition, giving the flag a single, clear focal point. The layout is formal and symmetrical, with the wing forms balanced across the field so the eye settles on the middle of the emblem. Nothing competes with them, which suits the dignified mood of an official civic seal.

Meaning & Symbolism

The wings carry three layers of meaning. First, they stand for the Columbia Phoenix, the city's resilience and its ability to rise again after the fire of 1865. Second, they recall the historical idea of residents finding refuge under the wings of Columbia. Third, the design points to the three rivers that meet in the area and to Columbia's role as a central regional hub. Adopted on March 10, 2020, and designed by Nate Puza, the flag gives the community a formal emblem of its strength and its geographical and historical character.
