This is the official flag of Madison, Wisconsin, a compact heraldic emblem that maps the city's lakes, its narrow land bridge and its state capitol onto a single field of colour.

Visual Elements & Composition

Sky blue fills the field, and it dominates the design. A diagonal white stripe cuts across it, and a black cross sits within the composition. A gold circle completes the palette of sky blue, white, black and gold. The layout is clean and flat, with no ornament beyond these four colours and shapes, which gives the flag the crisp, formal look of traditional heraldry.

Meaning & Symbolism

Each element is a map in miniature. The sky blue stands for the lakes that surround the city. The diagonal white stripe is the isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, the strip of land that puts Madison where it is. The black cross represents the four main lakes, Mendota, Monona, Kegonsa and Waubesa, and also the cross-shaped floor plan of the Wisconsin State Capitol. The gold circle is the Capitol's dome.

The original design was adopted on April 12, 1962, with a Zia sun symbol at its centre. On July 24, 2018, the city replaced that sun with the gold circle, a change that tied the flag more directly to the building that anchors local civic life.
