Meaning & Symbolism

The emblem is the mon, or family crest, of the Ogasawara clan, a samurai house descended from the Seiwa Genji. The three-tiered diamond is called sangaibishi, and the clan used it on banners, armour and war hats. The Ogasawara ruled Kokura Domain in Buzen Province from 1632, when Ogasawara Tadazane entered Kokura from Akashi, until the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Its governing domain was assessed at 150,000 koku, a measure of rice yield that signified its rank.
