Meaning & Symbolism

This flag was used from 1946 to 1948 by the Provisional People's Committee for North Korea, a Soviet-backed administration established in February 1946. It came before the founding of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in September 1948. The design follows the older pan-Korean Taegukgi tradition rather than the star-and-stripe flag adopted in 1948. The four trigrams, heaven, fire, water and earth, are said to symbolise the harmony of the universe, while the white ground reads as peace and purity. It is a flag from a brief transitional interval, before the division of the peninsula was formalised.
