Visual Elements & Composition

The flag is a rectangle divided by a Nordic cross, and the field is rich with warm and cool colour. The ring near the hoist is the focal point: one half is red, representing the sun, and the other half is blue, representing the moon. Red, green, yellow and blue carry the palette throughout, drawn from the traditional gakti dress. Shapes are clean and geometric, with no shading or texture, so the colour boundaries stay sharp.

Meaning & Symbolism

This is the flag of the Sami people of Sapmi, the region spanning northern Finland, Norway, Sweden and Russia. It was adopted on 15 August 1986 at the 13th Nordic Sami Conference in Are, Sweden, chosen from more than seventy entries. The winning design was by the artist Astrid Bahl. The sun-and-moon ring echoes the ring symbols found on traditional Sami shamanic drums, and the motif draws on the poem Paiven Parneh, or "The Son of the Sun," by Anders Fjellner. The flag stands for cultural pride, indigenous identity and a heritage carried across the North.
