Visual Elements & Composition

The rider and his horse sit at the centre of the scene and drive the whole image forward. Behind them, the followers stream across the picture in a dense, shadowy mass, so the eye moves with the riders instead of resting on any one figure. The palette is dark and tonal, with murky blacks and greys that let the pale forms of the horse and the rider stand out. Nothing in the composition is static: every line points toward motion.

The Wild Chase belongs to a folk tradition found across Germanic lands, in which Wotan leads a host of souls through the night sky, a storm of hooves and wind that no living person should meet. Stuck, a Munich painter working at the height of the Symbolist movement, took that legend and made it a study of the supernatural. The dead here are not sentimental ghosts.
