I Field Force Vietnam (US Army) I Field Force Vietnam, often abbreviated as I FFV or I Corps, was a combined US Army and Marine field force headquartered in Phu Bai, South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It operated under the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) from 1965 to 1972, with its responsibilities transitioning to Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group (MACV) from 1972 to 1973. I Field Force Vietnam's area of operations encompassed the northern half of South Vietnam, including the I Corps Tactical Zone, which covered the provinces from Quang Tri in the north to Da Nang and Hue in the center, and southward to Thua Thien province. The force was responsible for securing key transportation routes, population centers, and critical infrastructure against enemy infiltration and insurgency. I Field Force Vietnam consisted of various US Army and Marine units, including infantry, armor, artillery, aviation, logistics, and support elements. It worked closely with the South Vietnamese military to achieve common objectives and maintain security within its area of operations. The force also coordinated intelligence, reconnaissance, and counterinsurgency efforts to disrupt enemy activities and protect the civilian population. As the Vietnam War progressed, I Field Force Vietnam faced numerous challenges, including the Tet Offensive in 1968, which tested the resilience and adaptability of the force. Despite these challenges, I Field Force Vietnam played a critical role in the overall US strategy during the Vietnam War until its withdrawal in 1973.
