This design takes the two-letter-and-numeral shorthand of Ireland and sets it down as a clean, typographic mark, with nothing ornamental to get in the way.
Visual Elements & Composition
The composition is built on typography alone. The letters IRL sit alongside the designation N2, arranged in a structured, alphanumeric layout that reads like a serialized code rather than a picture. There are no illustrations or decorative flourishes; the lettering and numerals do all the work, and the result is clear, direct and professional in its restraint.
Meaning & Symbolism
The design rests on the standard country code format, where IRL is the recognised identifier for Ireland. Pairing it with N2 turns the code into a serialised label, so the piece speaks to national identity and geographic location in the same shorthand used on signage, documents and vehicle plates. It is a modern way of referencing Ireland through coded notation, drawing its meaning from the linguistic and symbolic short form of the country itself.
On the Ceramic Mug
A mug is turned in the hand and read at close range, so a code-style mark suits it well: the eye lands on the lettering as the cup is lifted and rotated, and the simple layout stays legible from every angle. It makes a quiet, understated companion for a morning coffee or a long afternoon tea, with the Irish identifier always in view on your desk.
