'Major General George Armstrong Custer (U.S. Civil War)' George Armstrong Custer, born on December 5, 1839, and died on June 30, 1876, was a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army. He is particularly remembered for his dramatic defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn in Montana during the Great Sioux War. During the Civil War, Custer rose through the ranks rapidly due to his flamboyant leadership style and tactical brilliance.
