Marquess of Normanby COA (New Zealand) Shot Glass - Design

This shot glass showcases the intricate and historically rich coat of arms of the Marquess of Normanby, prominently displayed during George Augustus Constantine Phipps's governorship of New Zealand. The design is a vibrant tapestry of heraldic symbols, each element carefully chosen to represent the family's lineage and heritage.

Quartered Shield

The shield itself is quartered, displaying four distinct sections, each rich in symbolism. The first quarter features a black field (sable) adorned with a trefoil slipped (a three-leaf clover with a stem) positioned between eight silver or white stars (mullets), a direct representation of the Phipps family.

The second quarter is a striking combination of silver and blue vertical stripes (paly of six), crossed by a diagonal red stripe (bend), representing the Annesley family. This division speaks to the blending of family lines and the continuity of ancestral ties.

A central element is the Royal Arms of King James II within a border of alternating ermine and azure squares (bordure compony). This signifies a special connection granted by King James II to his natural daughter, Lady Catherine Darnley, a mark of royal favour and lineage.

The fourth quarter features a simple yet elegant red field (gules) bearing a silver or white fleur-de-lis, the emblematic flower of the Darnley family, completing the intricate weaving of ancestral significance.

Crest & Supporters

Above the shield, the crest presents a black lion's gamb (leg) holding a silver or white trefoil slipped, further reinforcing the Phipps connection. This powerful symbol highlights strength and heritage.

Flanking the shield are the supporters: on the right (dexter) side, a white unicorn with black spots (ermine), armed and adorned with a garland of roses. On the left (sinister) side, a white goat with black spots (ermine), bearing blue hooves and also adorned with roses, mirror the strength and connections.

Motto

The motto, "Virtute quies," meaning "Rest in virtue," is elegantly displayed to provide the finishing touch to this historical design. The entire coat of arms creates a visual narrative of lineage, honor, and royal connections.

Compact, heavy-based shot glasses made from clear, restaurant-grade glass. One standard size (1.5 oz / ≈44.3 ml) — sturdy, stack-friendly, and built to handle frequent service without fuss.

These shot glasses feel solid in the hand thanks to a thick, weighty base that keeps them steady on busy bar tops. The walls are even and clear, giving a nice, unobstructed view of the pour; the rim is smoothed for comfortable sipping.

They’re engineered for regular use: consistent dimensions, dependable weight, and a simple silhouette that suits both casual venues and more formal tasting counters. Designed to perform rather than show off.

  • Material: 100% clear glass for pure clarity and clean presentation.
  • Capacity: 1.5 oz (≈44.3 ml) — standard shot measure.
  • Base: heavy solid glass base that reduces tipping and improves balance.
  • Construction: restaurant-grade durability for frequent handling and washing.
  • Print-ready: suitable for single-sided print applications that withstand typical use.

Perfect for quick pours, samplers, and neat shots. Their compact footprint makes them easy to place on trays and tasting lines, while the heavier base keeps things steady during service.

  1. Bar service: quick, consistent pours — less wobble when carrying a tray of shots.
  2. Tastings: uniform size is handy for sampling flights or spirit tastings.
  3. Events: robust enough for pop-ups, festivals, and busy bartending shifts.

Storage tip: store upright and avoid tight stacking to protect rims and preserve clarity.

Dishwasher-safe for everyday cleaning — place on the top rack and use a normal household cycle. Repeated exposure to very high commercial temperatures can shorten glass life, so choose gentler programs where practical.

When you want to extend clarity and finish: hand-wash with warm water, a mild detergent, and a soft cloth; dry right away to avoid water spots. Handle by the body (not the rim) to reduce accidental chipping.

One size only: 1.5 oz (≈44.3 ml). Use the dimensions below for shelving, packaging, or tray planning.
