The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is an independent federal agency that supervises, charters, and insures federal and most state-chartered credit unions in the United States. Established by the Federal Credit Union Act of 1934, its main objective is to ensure the stability of the nation's credit union system while fostering a safe, sound, and diverse credit union industry that provides affordable financial services to approximately 120 million members across the U.S. The NCUA manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), which insures individual deposits up to $250,000 per account holder at each covered credit union. Additionally, it offers examination and supervision of credit unions for compliance with laws, regulations, and best practices in areas such as financial management, consumer protection, and safe and sound lending practices. The NCUA also provides technical assistance and education to credit unions, facilitates systemic risk monitoring, and resolves failed credit unions to protect depositors and maintain stability within the industry.
