The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is an independent federal agency of the United States government established in 1935 to administer the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). The NLRB aims to protect the rights of private-sector employees to organize and to bargain collectively with their employers, as well as to prevent and remedy unfair labor practices. It exercises jurisdiction over union and non-union private employers and unions, as well as federal government agencies and operations controlled by private contractors. The agency's mission is to promote collective bargaining, ensure fair representation of employees, protect the exercise of employee rights, and preserve the integrity of the collective bargaining process. The NLRB has a five-member board appointed by the President of the United States with advice and consent from the Senate, serving terms of five years. It operates under the Federal Service Impasses Panel (FSIP) to resolve negotiation impasses in the federal sector.
