The Obverse of the Coat of Arms of Chile from 1812 to 1814 represents a historical emblem used during the early years of Chilean independence. This version of the coat of arms features a shield divided into four quarters, symbolizing the country's regions: Arma (North), Chiloé (South), Araucania (Centre) and Concepción (East). The central image is a lamb bearing a cross, representing the patron saint of Chile, the Virgin Mary. In addition, there is a ribbon below with the national motto "Por la razón o la fuerza" ("By Reason or Force"). This design was replaced in 1814 by another version that continues to be used as the official emblem of Chile today.
