This is a map of the Pacific as it stood in 1921, drawn to show who held what after the First World War.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built on the cartographic grid of the Pacific, with the eye pulled across open ocean toward clusters of islands and the coastlines of the surrounding continents. Boundary lines do the work of composition. They run in fine, deliberate strokes around territories and island groups, so the ocean reads as empty space and the political divisions read as the active subject. Meaning & Symbolism

The lines record a settlement.
