The President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) is a United States government committee consisting of prominent individuals from within and outside the federal government who advise the President and the White House on science, technology, and related issues. Its mission is to ensure that the policies of the U.S. government take full advantage of the most promising opportunities offered by advancements in science and technology for the welfare of the nation. Established in 1957 as the President's Science Advisory Committee (PSAC), it was reorganized under its current name in 1980, with a broader mandate to include not only scientific matters but also technological considerations. The Council reports directly to the White House and is chaired by the President's Science Advisor, who serves as Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Members are appointed by the President to serve at his or her discretion. They come from various fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and other disciplines relevant to the Council's mission. The Council holds regular meetings and releases reports on a wide range of topics, such as research funding, energy policy, cybersecurity, and health care. Its recommendations have played a critical role in shaping U.S. science and technology policy over several administrations.
