This design carries a rare hand-coloured tintype portrait of Private Roscoe G. Davenport, a Union soldier photographed in front of a painted rugged coastline.

Visual Elements & Composition

The portrait is trimmed into an oval, and the oval does most of the work. A beaded black frame and a gilt inner mat draw the eye inward toward the seated man in his dark military-style coat, with its round badge catching the light. Meaning & Symbolism

The portrait dates from the 1860s and belongs to the Liljenquist Family Collection of Civil War Photographs at the Library of Congress. Davenport served in Company H of the 21st Maine Infantry, a nine-month regiment organised in October 1862 that operated around Baton Rouge and the Siege of Port Hudson before mustering out in August 1863. He died of disease on February 27, 1863, while his regiment was still in service, so the picture stands as a lasting likeness of a man who never returned home. The painted coast was a popular studio prop of the period, offering soldiers a picturesque setting before they went to war.
