Private William Sargent, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry - Color Morphing Mug Design

This design is a historic studio portrait of Union Private William Sargent standing upright in his uniform after both his arms were amputated.

Visual Elements & Composition

The figure fills the frame, centred and standing straight with his shoulders squared. His Union uniform dominates the image, and the empty sleeves are the first thing the eye settles on. Meaning & Symbolism

Sargent enlisted around the age of 18 in late 1861 and served in Company E of the 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry. He was severely wounded in both arms at the Battle of Seven Pines, also called Fair Oaks, in Virginia on June 1, 1862, and both arms were later amputated under military medical care. The photograph was taken by Bundy & Williams of New Haven, Connecticut, around 1861 to 1862. Standing in uniform after these injuries, Sargent embodies both military resilience and the physical cost of the war, turning a casualty statistic into one soldier's face.
