This is a proposed 1914 coat of arms for German East Africa, a heraldic design drawn up for the colony that was never formally adopted.

Visual Elements & Composition

Red takes the largest share of the design, with gold on the crown and light grey and white in the lion's head and eagle panels, and black on the eagle. A vertical shield sits at the centre, split horizontally into fields. A white lion's head is set on the shield, and a black heraldic eagle with a Hohenzollern-style shield on its breast rises above it. An arched imperial crown tops the composition, with white heraldic eagles on its panels. The layout is formal and symmetrical, in flat vector heraldry.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lion's head stands for the wildlife and the local character of East Africa, the land the German Empire hoped to rule as a colony. The black Reich Eagle and the imperial crown link the territory to the authority of the German Kaiser, presenting the colony as part of the empire. The design was drawn up in 1914 as part of a government plan to give each overseas colony its own flag and arms, but the outbreak of the First World War and Germany's loss of its colonies in 1918 ended the project before the arms were adopted.
