Meaning & Symbolism

The photograph was taken by Alexander Gardner and is held in the Library of Congress Civil War collection. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy, and when Confederate forces set fire to military and industrial sites in April 1865, large parts of the city were left in ruins before Union troops arrived. The people on the barges, many of them formerly enslaved and refugees, carry their possessions as they move through that devastation. The ruins stand for the fall of the Confederate capital, and the crowded barges stand for displacement and the uncertain journey toward freedom that followed emancipation.
