Visual Elements & Composition

Meaning & Symbolism

In April 1865, retreating Confederate forces and citizens set fire to warehouses, factories, and blockhouses rather than let them fall to Union troops. The fires spread beyond control and destroyed a large district of the city that had served as the Confederate capital for most of the war. The ruins along the James River and Kanawha Canal Basin stand as evidence of that scorched-earth choice and of the industrial and commercial collapse that followed. The image is held in the Library of Congress, and it records one of the war's most destructive turning points.
