Visual Elements & Composition

Meaning & Symbolism

The bridge was built in the 1830s and 1840s to carry the lifeline between the Confederate capital at Richmond and the rail hub at Petersburg. It moved troops, weapons, and supplies until the last days of the Civil War. In April 1865, as Union forces closed on the city, Confederate troops burned it so it could not be captured and used. What survived is the stone foundation, a deliberate act of destruction that became a record of the scorched-earth policies of the era. The piers still stand near Belle Isle and Brown's Island, within the James River Park System, as some of the most visible remnants of the city's wartime past.
