Royal Arms of Norway & Denmark (1559-1699) The Royal Arms of Norway and Denmark, in use from 1559 to 1699, represent the heraldic symbols during the Danish rule over both countries. These arms combined elements from the individual coats of arms of each kingdom. For Norway, it consisted of a lion passant guardant holding a fleur-de-lis, symbolizing the country's union with Denmark and Sweden. The Danish arm displayed a three-legged gridiron on a black background, representing Saint Olav, the patron saint of Norway. During this period, the two countries were politically united under the same monarchy despite maintaining separate identities.
