Saint Augustine, Fla. Bastions of Fort Marion (U.S. Civil War) Fort Marion, located in the historic city of Saint Augustine, Florida, is a U.S. military fortification constructed between 1821 and 1825. During the American Civil War, it served as a Confederate prison from 1861 to 1865, holding over 2,600 prisoners, including Native Americans, African Americans, and Union officers. The fort was named after Spanish military leader Marquis de Apalachee, who defended Saint Augustine against the British in the 1700s. Today, Fort Marion stands as a testament to the region's rich history and serves as a museum, offering visitors an insight into the lives of the prisoners held there during the Civil War. The fort also houses a collection of over 40 Native American statues, known as "The Mound," created by artist Charles Bunnell in the late 1800s.
