Samuel Jones (U.S. Civil War) Samuel Jones was a Confederate Army officer during the American Civil War, primarily recognized for his service as a brigadier general and later as a major general in the Confederate States Army. Born on February 23, 1807, in Fauquier County, Virginia, Jones served in the U.S. Army prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, participating in the Seminole Wars and Mexican-American War. After the secession of Virginia from the Union, he joined the Confederate forces and played a significant role in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, notably under General Stonewall Jackson. Jones also led troops in the Battle of Antietam, where he suffered a debilitating wound that ended his active military service. Post-war, Samuel Jones resided in Texas until his death on January 16, 1878.
