A pentagonal route marker reading SP 147 sits in the centre of the piece, drawn in black outline on white.
Visual Elements & Composition
The palette is strictly black and white, with white covering most of the field. The pentagon outline is set with a thin inner border that frames the two-part designation, SP above the numerals 147. Nothing else is drawn, so the composition reads as a single sign, centred and easy to take in at a glance.
Meaning & Symbolism
The SP 147 marker is a road designation from Brazil, and the piece takes the language of transport signage as its subject. A route number is a compact way of naming a long journey, linking a place to a network of roads that people use every day. The design celebrates that everyday geography rather than any single landmark.
Held in the Hand
A mug is turned in the hand while it is drunk from, so the pentagon moves around the curve of the body as you rotate it. Its clean outline stays legible from the handle side and from the front, and the flat black-and-white layout means the marker keeps its shape wherever the cup is held.
