This design shows the face of Mars as a map, a rust-toned surface of craters, plains and dark markings laid out across the full curve of the image.

Visual Elements & Composition

The planet fills the frame with no horizon and no sky, so the eye moves across terrain rather than landing on a single subject. Warm ochre and burnt orange dominate, broken by darker patches where the surface shows through the haze. Crater rims and fine linework give the surface its texture, and the layout reads as a cartographic plate, with its geography given the same weight across the whole image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title names the subject directly. In 1971 and 1972, a planet-wide dust storm hid much of Mars from view, and the Mariner 9 spacecraft was the first probe to orbit the planet and survey it through that haze.
