This design is a 1973 map of Mars, drawn from the spacecraft imagery of a planet that had only just come into view.

Visual Elements & Composition

The planet fills the frame as a single rounded surface, rendered in dusty ochres, rust reds and muted browns. Darker tones mark the older highland terrain, while lighter, hazier patches sweep across the disc like residue on glass. Craters and fine markings are picked out in the same earthy palette, so the map reads as one continuous surface rather than a set of separate features. Any lettering stays small and sits at the edges, leaving the planet to dominate.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title tells the story. When Mariner 9 reached Mars in late 1971, a planet-wide dust storm hid most of the surface, and the first images showed little more than a hazy, blank face. Over the following months the storm settled and the true landscape emerged, and mapmakers in 1973 were turning those photographs into the first detailed charts of the planet. The "dusty face" is therefore both a literal description of the atmosphere and a record of a moment when a world we had only guessed at began to be seen clearly.
