Visual Elements & Composition

Dark space fills nearly the whole frame, and the galaxy's band of stars sweeps diagonally across it, denser at the core and thinning toward the edges. Points of light vary in brightness, so the eye moves from bright clusters to faint scatter. There is no border or frame. The map runs edge to edge, so nothing interrupts the sweep of the band.

Meaning & Symbolism

A map of the Milky Way is a picture of where we live: the flattened disc of stars, gas and dust that holds our Sun and everything we see from Earth on a clear night.
