STS 89, also known as Endeavour mission ST-57, was a space shuttle mission launched by NASA on February 4, 1998. The mission primarily focused on the deployment of the Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV)-1, an uncrewed resupply vehicle designed to transport cargo between the International Space Station (ISS) and the Earth's orbit. The nine-day mission was commanded by Terence T. Henricks and piloted by Kevin Kregel. The crew also included four mission specialists: James Voss, Steven Lindsey, Thomas Akers, and Umberto Guidoni of the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Apart from deploying OTV-1, STS 89 was significant for its role in preparing for the assembly of the ISS. The mission performed a rendezvous with the Russian Mir space station, conducting joint operations and exchanging cargo. This marked the first time an American spacecraft had docked with Mir since the loss of Shuttle Columbia and its crew during STS-107 in 2003. STS 89 concluded on February 13, 1998, after completing 135 orbits around the Earth and logging a total mission duration of 9 days, 16 hours, 27 minutes, and 4 seconds. The mission served as a crucial stepping stone in NASA's efforts to establish the International Space Station as a permanent human-occupied research facility.
