The three men wear the uniforms of the Union army, and their names were never recorded, so the picture stands for ordinary servicemen of the 1861 to 1865 conflict. The high ground they occupy represents the hard-won positions of the Tennessee campaign, and their relaxed stance reads as a moment of rest from its hardships. The Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division preserves the tintype as an authentic 19th-century artifact.
