Unidentified Soldier In Union Uniform And 4th Infantry Kepi With Field And Staff Officers Sword (U.S. Civil War) Pint Glass 16oz

A hand-coloured sixth-plate portrait from the early Civil War shows an unidentified Union soldier seated in a 4th Infantry kepi, his officer's sword resting at his side.

Visual Elements & Composition

Sepia grey covers much of the frame, with antique gold in the oval mat and dark navy in the uniform. A flat-topped kepi with a badge sits high on the figure, and a crossbelt with a cartridge box runs diagonally across his chest. The sword lies along the body, its long line leading the eye down the composition. Pale cream and a touch of oxblood add small notes of colour where the studio hand-tinting was applied, and the gilt oval case frames the whole figure in a rectangle of dark tone.

Meaning & Symbolism

The kepi carries a 4th Infantry designation that ties the portrait to a regular United States Army regiment, and the sword marks a Field and Staff officer's equipment rather than a private's gear. The uniform places him in the Northern forces that fought the Confederacy between 1861 and 1865. Kepis like this one were widely worn early in the war, before the uniform became more uniform in practice. The photograph is held in the Liljenquist Family Collection at the Library of Congress, which keeps the anonymous soldier's likeness alongside the names of many who could be identified.

Worn at the Hand, Lifted to the Lip

This 16oz mixing glass has a narrow base and a comfortable grip, so it sits in the hand the way the seated soldier holds his sword, steady and close. The glass is crystal clear, which lets the sepia and gold of the portrait show through as the liquid moves. It works as a shaker and as a serving glass, so the same piece goes from mixing to pouring without changing hands.

Clear 16 oz (≈0.47 L) pint glasses made from solid glass with a heavy base for steady placement. Narrower at the bottom for an easier grip and balanced feel — durable, dishwasher-safe, and ideal for both serving and mixing.

These pints are crafted from 100% clear glass that showcases the drink inside — color, clarity and carbonation are all visible. A heavier, solid base reduces tipping and gives the glass a satisfying weight in the hand while the gently tapered body makes holding and carrying more comfortable.

Built to last, the construction resists chipping under normal use and is suitable for busy service environments as well as retail display. One-sided print work reads bright against the clear surface; the overall aesthetic is clean and modern.

  • Material: 100% clear glass for pure clarity and gloss.
  • Capacity: 16 oz (standard U.S. pint / ≈0.47 L).
  • Base: heavy solid glass base reduces tipping and improves balance.
  • Shape: narrower bottom for a comfortable grip and easier carrying.
  • Durability: dishwasher-safe and built for regular use.

Use these glasses for draft pours, mixed drinks, iced beverages and more. Their clear walls show off color and bubbles, which makes them a great choice for menus, tasting flights, and bars where presentation matters.

  1. Serving: ideal for beers, sodas, iced teas and cocktails served cold.
  2. Mixing: also works as a simple mixing glass for shaken or stirred cocktails in casual settings.
  3. Display: clean silhouette fits behind bars, on shelves, or on retail racks.

Quick tip: because the base is heavier, these glasses feel stable on trays and counters — handy when serving multiple drinks at once.

These glasses are dishwasher-safe; place them on the top rack and use a regular household cycle. For best longevity, avoid stacking them tightly and steer clear of high-heat commercial wash cycles when possible.

Hand wash with warm water and mild dish soap when you want to preserve maximum clarity and avoid sudden temperature shocks. Handle by the body, not just the rim, to reduce the chance of accidental chipping.
