The United States Department of State, commonly abbreviated as DOS or DoS, is a federal executive department responsible for the conduct of foreign affairs of the United States, authorized by the U.S. Constitution. Established in 1789, it is one of the original three departments. The Department's primary role is to carry out the foreign policy guidelines of the President and the nation, by negotiating treaties and agreements, conducting diplomacy, and maintaining consular services around the world. It manages and coordinates various activities such as cultural exchanges, foreign aid, and trade negotiations, among others. The Secretary of State serves as the head of the Department and is a member of the Cabinet. The Department has numerous offices, bureaus, and agencies in Washington D.C., and over 275 diplomatic missions overseas. These include embassies, consulates, and other posts that work to advance U.S. interests abroad.
