The U.S. 2nd Cavalry Division is a premier combined arms division of the United States Army. Originally formed as a cavalry division in 1957 during the Cold War, it was reorganized as a light infantry division in 1963. Since then, it has been involved in numerous operations, including serving in Vietnam and Iraq. Currently, the division is stationed in Germany and falls under the United States Army Europe and Africa command. The 2nd Cavalry Division's mission is to provide ready, scalable combat power to defend NATO allies and deter aggression against them. It consists of approximately 8,000 soldiers organized into a headquarters, five brigade combat teams, and various support units. Throughout its history, the division has earned numerous awards and honors for its service, including the Presidential Unit Citation and Valorous Unit Award.
