The U.S. 55th Infantry Division is a historical military unit of the United States Army that was active during World War II. Established on July 15, 1943, it was composed primarily of Mexican-American soldiers and was commonly known as the "Tropic Lightning." The division saw significant combat action in the Pacific Theater, participating in key battles such as the Battle of Guam, the Battle of Saipan, and the Battle of Okinawa. After World War II, the 55th Infantry Division was deactivated on December 15, 1946. In 1983, a new unit called the 55th Infantry Regiment was formed as part of the 20th Combat Aviation Brigade and continues to serve in the U.S. Army today. The legacy of the original 55th Infantry Division is significant, symbolizing the contributions of Mexican-American soldiers during World War II and their integral role in the Allied victory.
