The map is laid out along the northeastern coast of the United States, with the route of the corridor as its organising line. The eye travels from the upper left toward the lower right, following the cities as they string together rather than settling on any single point. Meaning & Symbolism

The term "megalopolis" was coined by geographer Jean Gottmann in 1961 to describe this region, where cities and suburbs grow into one another until they form a single metropolitan web. Gottmann's book on the subject framed the corridor as a new kind of settlement, one defined by movement of people, goods and ideas rather than by a single city centre. A 1994 map of the same stretch carries that idea forward, showing the Boston-to-Washington run as one place rather than a list of separate towns.
