This design turns a stretch of the American Northeast into a single, continuous map, running from Boston down to Washington.

Visual Elements & Composition

The map is laid out on a long diagonal, so the eye travels from the northern end of the corridor to the southern end in one sweep. Coastline, state lines and city locations are drawn as fine linework, with place names set in small, clean lettering. The white ground does much of the work, letting the dense network of roads and urban clusters read clearly against it. Nothing is decorative for its own sake; every mark is cartographic.

Meaning & Symbolism

The corridor it depicts takes its name from the geographer Jean Gottmann, who coined "Megalopolis" in 1961 to describe the chain of metropolitan areas that had merged into one continuous urban region. The map is a portrait of that idea: cities that were once separate towns, now joined by highways, rail lines and commuting patterns into a single working landscape. The 1994 date places the design in a period when that corridor was already being studied as one economic and social system, rather than a string of individual cities.
