This is a road map of the Northwestern United States and its neighbouring Canadian provinces, drawn as a printed sheet from 1950 and built around the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

Visual Elements & Composition

Pale yellow covers most of the sheet, with cream, sage green and pale blue laid over the land, water and borders. Brick red appears only in small touches, so the palette reads as calm and aged. A rectangular frame with a text border holds everything in place. The printed labels are set in capitals: NORTHWESTERN UNITED STATES, AND NEIGHBORING CANADIAN PROVINCES, then WASHINGTON, OREGON, MONTANA, WYOMING, BRITISH COLUMBIA, ALBERTA and SASKATCHEWAN. A rectangular inset in the corner isolates the PUGET SOUND REGION, giving the coastline its own close-up. Fine road lines and the Pacific shoreline run through the whole sheet.

Meaning & Symbolism

The map was compiled by the Cartographic Section of the National Geographic and published in June 1950, with Gilbert Grosvenor as Editor of The National Geographic Magazine. It shows the US Northwest and the southern edges of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan as one connected region, a view of the continent that reflects the mid-century world. The Puget Sound inset points to the importance of that waterway, with its harbours, settlements and transport links.
