The USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN 641) is a U.S. Navy submarine that served as a ballistic missile submarine in the United States' nuclear deterrence fleet. Named after South American revolutionary Simón Bolívar, this vessel was launched on August 25, 1967, and commissioned on April 28, 1968. The USS Simon Bolivar was part of the Ethan Allen class of submarines, characterized by their long range, stealth capabilities, and ability to carry up to 16 Polaris missiles, each equipped with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs). During its active service, the USS Simon Bolivar completed numerous patrols and provided a significant contribution to the U.S. nuclear deterrence strategy. The submarine underwent several refits to maintain its operational readiness, including updates to its Polaris missile system in the 1980s and a comprehensive modernization program in the early 1990s that extended its service life until 2003. The USS Simon Bolivar was decommissioned on November 17, 2004, and is currently listed as part of the Nuclear-Powered Ballistic Missile Submarine Fleet museum in Groton, Connecticut.
