This design is a U.S. Route 97 highway shield for Washington, the national route marker carrying the number 97 with the state name for context.
Visual Elements & Composition
The artwork is a clean, flat graphic in which the U.S. shield, with the letters U and S above the numerals 97, forms the focal point. The palette is high-contrast and functional, in the manner of federal route signs, and the layout is centred and uncluttered. The number is the dominant element, so the route identity is clear at a glance.
Meaning & Symbolism
U.S. Route 97 runs through Washington from the Oregon border to the Canadian border, linking the state's interior with its neighbours. The shield is the federal route marker, applied to U.S. routes across the country, and it sits apart from the state and county signs used on local roads. The design celebrates the long north-south corridor and the sense of travel it carries across the state.
Turned in the Hand
A mug is turned in the hand, so the shield passes across the curve of the cup and comes back into view with each turn. The number 97 sits at the front where it is seen first, and the high-contrast lettering stays readable as the mug is lifted for a drink.
