The Washington Navy Yard, located in Washington, D.C., is a historic naval facility with significant historical importance dating back to the early 19th century. During the U.S. Civil War, one notable event associated with the yard was the detention of Edman Spangler, a conspirator involved in the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. Edman Spangler was a member of a group known as the Confederate Secret Service, who planned the assassination of President Lincoln and other government officials. On March 25, 1865, he was arrested in Washington, D.C., along with several others for their involvement in this conspiracy. After his arrest, Spangler was held at the Washington Navy Yard. He was manacled, or restrained using handcuffs and leg irons, as a precautionary measure during his imprisonment. The Washington Navy Yard served as a temporary detention facility for these conspirators before they were transferred to military tribunals for trial. Following the conclusion of the trials, four conspirators, including Mary Surratt (the first woman executed by the U.S. federal government) and Lewis Powell (who attempted to assassinate Secretary of State William Seward), were hanged on July 7, 1865. The events surrounding these conspirators' involvement in the plot to assassinate President Lincoln are a significant part of U.S. Civil War history.
