Visual Elements & Composition

Almost all of the surface is dark. The oceans and the great empty stretches of land sit in deep black, so the eye goes straight to the light. Those lights are clustered and dense where people live: a bright web across eastern North America, the crowded glow of Western Europe, the long coastal strings of Japan and China, and the sprawl of India. Elsewhere the land falls away into darkness, and the sparse lights of smaller towns and gas flares thin out into isolated specks. The layout is simple and unbroken, with no border, caption or lettering to compete with the map itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

The image is a composite of city lights gathered by NASA from nighttime satellite sensors.
