This is a map of the seafloor, drawn to show the deep ocean as if the water had been drained away.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built around the mid-ocean ridge, a long, branching range of mountains that snakes through the middle of the world's oceans. Its crests and rift valleys are rendered in lighter, glowing tones against darker shading for the abyssal plains, so the eye follows the ridge from one basin to the next. Continental margins sit at the edges as more muted bands, and the deepest trenches appear as the darkest passages. The layout is continuous rather than framed, so no single ocean dominates and the whole globe reads as one connected surface.

Meaning & Symbolism

The map presents the ocean floor as a landscape with its own mountains, valleys and fractures, which was a radical idea when it was made. It grew out of the work of marine geologist Bruce Heezen and cartographer Marie Tharp, who turned soundings from research ships into a picture of the seabed. Their survey revealed the ridge system and the spreading of the ocean floor, evidence that helped establish plate tectonics. The 1981 edition carries that discovery forward as a record of how the planet's surface was finally seen.
