WV-23 1922 (Virginia) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug
This design recalls the original West Virginia State Route 23, a marker from 1922 that set out a road from Moorefield toward the Virginia state line.
Visual Elements & Composition
The layout is a simple route marker: the letters WV and the number 23 sit as the main elements, with the year 1922 as a quiet secondary line. Black type on a white ground gives the marker a crisp, utilitarian look, and no ornament interrupts it. The design is organised around the number, so the route is what the eye takes in first, and the clean geometry reflects the early road signs of the period.
Meaning & Symbolism
Route 23 was one of the primary routings laid out in West Virginia when the state began numbering its roads in 1922. It ran east from Moorefield through Wardensville and northeast through Yellow Spring toward the Virginia border, linking the valley towns to the wider road network. In 1941 the route was renumbered as WV 55 and WV 259 to match the adjacent Virginia routes, so the marker records a moment when the state’s roads were first being put in order.
On the Coffee Mug
A mug is turned in the hand as it is lifted, so the marker moves into view and out again with each turn. The white ceramic gives the black lettering a clean field, and the route number reads well from the side of the cup. It is a fitting design for a slow morning, with the number taking shape over the first sip and a small piece of early West Virginia road history on the table.
