WV-31 1922 (Virginia) (Road Sign) White Coffee Mug
A red and white band marker for West Virginia State Route 31 as it stood in 1922, drawn in the plain colours of the early roadside.
Visual Elements & Composition
Red and white are the only colours in the design, and they carry the whole composition. The marker is a set of painted bands rather than a shield, so the eye reads it as a simple stripe pattern. Nothing is layered on top of the bands, which keeps the design direct and quietly graphic.
Meaning & Symbolism
In 1922 route markers were not yet the standardised shields seen on modern roads. Instead, travellers followed bands of red and white painted onto telephone and telegraph poles, and this design records that foundational method of road marking. Route 31 ran between Nutter Farm and Harrisville, part of the early West Virginia State Highway System and a reminder of how the state's roads first came to be connected.
Shaped for the Mug
A mug is turned in the hand, so the red and white bands pass across the field of view as the cup rotates. The stripes sit well on the curve of the ceramic, and the simple pattern stays readable from each side.
