A Wyoming state route marker for Route 87, a plain shield-style sign that carries the route number as its single point of focus.
Visual Elements & Composition
The design is stark and functional, built from the shape of a state route shield with the number 87 set at its centre. The layout has no ornament and no secondary text, so the marker is read by its outline and its numeral alone. The clean, high-contrast arrangement follows the conventions of American road signage.
Meaning & Symbolism
A state route marker identifies a road within a state's own network, and this one tells drivers they are on Wyoming Route 87 rather than the federal U.S. Route 87 that shares the number. That distinction is the point of the sign. The design follows the standard set out in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and it stands as a tribute to the highways that connect Wyoming's towns across wide open country.
On the Mug
A mug is turned in the hand, so the shield passes around the curve of the cup as it rotates, and the number stays clear from the front. The simple outline suits the rounded form, and the marker reads well at the desk or the breakfast table. It is a fitting choice for anyone who has driven Wyoming's long stretches of road and wants a small reminder of them.
