Wyoming State Highway 90, rendered as the plain route marker that drivers across the state read from the roadside.
Visual Elements & Composition
The design rests on one clear element, the route marker bearing the number 90. Its lines are simple and its lettering is uncluttered, so the number is what the eye reads first. There is no decoration around the sign, and the spare layout suits its purpose, which is to be understood in an instant from a moving car.
Meaning & Symbolism
The marker follows the conventions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the national standard that governs American road signs, and specifically the route-sign form designated M1-5. Highway 90 is one of the numbered routes that give Wyoming's road network its order, and the design reflects the Americana of the open road and the everyday navigation it supports.
In the Hand
A mug is turned in the hand over the course of a morning, so the marker comes into view from several angles. Its single number holds its shape as the cup rotates, and the simple layout suits the curved ceramic surface.
