The XVI Corps is a corps-level formation of the United States Army. It was activated during World War II as part of the Sixth United States Army on July 10, 1944, and served under various command structures until it was inactivated on December 27, 1945. The XVI Corps saw action in the Pacific Theater against Japanese forces, participating notably in the invasion and subsequent capture of Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. The corps was redesignated as the 31st Army (XVI Corps) in October 1950 during the Korean War, serving under United Nations Command. It assumed command of the U.S. X Corps on January 27, 1951, and continued operations until it was reorganized into the 8th Army's III Corps on June 30, 1954. The XVI Corps designation was again activated in October 1961 during the Vietnam War, serving under Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG). It was disbanded on July 1, 1971. Throughout its history, the XVI Corps has been characterized by its adaptability and resilience in diverse operational environments.
