This is a 1950 National Geographic map of the American Northwest, running north across the border into Canada.

Visual Elements & Composition

The map fills its field as one continuous survey. Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming sit alongside the southern reaches of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, and political boundaries and regional divisions carry the composition. The eye moves from the broad interior out to the edges where the national lines meet. Alongside the main survey is an inset devoted to the Puget Sound region, which gives that coastline a scale of its own, separate from the wider view.

Meaning & Symbolism

Published in June 1950, the map was compiled and drawn by the Cartographic Section of National Geographic, with Gilbert Grosvenor serving as editor of the magazine. It works as a primary source. Its borders, settlements and transport networks show how the magazine and its era understood the region. The inset tells us the editors judged Puget Sound worthy of detail of its own, pointing to maritime access and key settlements. The map also presents the US Northwest and its Canadian neighbours as one connected landscape, a snapshot of mid-century geopolitics as much as of geography.
